Why Reading a Novel Can Help Your College Students StudyA critical analysis essay sample can help you get better grades. The average college student spends around eight hours a week studying, usually in smaller groups. In order to be a good student, you need to get more out of the time that you spend studying. This is where a critical analysis essay sample can help you.The typical college student will spend the majority of their time in large classrooms, reading textbooks and having discussions with other students. What this does is it forces them to memorize details they have learned in class, as well as creating walls between them and other students that they aren't interacting with much. This is fine when you are only taking a class for an hour or two a week, but when you are taking more time in class, it becomes more important that you have a solid memory.Instead of trying to cram for your classes, try and make sure that you spend time doing things that will help you memorize new information. One way to do this is by reading a novel. Since so many novels are written for adults, they are great study tools. By reading a novel you can learn about characters, plot, and the pacing of the novel. With all of these factors taken into account, you can use them to take notes for your critical analysis essay.Another great way to utilize a critical analysis essay sample is to use them for self-motivation. It isn't easy being a college student. You are stressed out because you are trying to figure out what to do for the next class. If you can force yourself to read a novel, you can make up your own schedule, work on something new every night, and try to understand what you want to do with your life.An even better way to use a critical analysis essay sample is to use them as a frame of reference for your own writing. Sometimes students write too much and don't really know where to start. By spending time doing a critical analysis essay sample you can get a sense of how y our topic should be structured. Then, when you write your own essay, you can make sure that you stick to your plan.If you are worried that the only reason that you will be able to benefit from a critical analysis essay sample is that it is a novel, then you may be surprised. For example, you may find that if you read a biography instead of going through a novel, you will understand more. Just as an example, many people find that they could use a little help learning about baseball. In addition to reading a novel, you can also use a critical analysis essay sample in a journal. Many students will write an essay about something that happened in their life and will have a few sentences about it in their journal. Using the essay as a jumping off point for your next piece of writing, you can create a better understanding about what the subject is about. Now that you know the benefits of reading a critical analysis essay sample, you can see why it is so important for you to be a great studen t. Using them on a regular basis will improve your memory, allow you to increase your creativity, and allow you to better prepare for your own essays. War for Independence Free Essays

Waging War for Independence (1764 – 1783) Stephanie Maharaj History 1301 Antrece Baggett October 12, 2012 The thirteen colonies moved from peaceful resistance to outright war against the British government’s â€Å"reform† programs of new taxes and regulations during the period of (1764-1783). These new programs had a significant impact on the people of the colonies, and caused a great uproar. Protests broke out, and eventually the American Revolution came into the picture. We will write a custom essay sample on War for Independence or any similar topic only for you Order Now I will explain some of the reasons colonists rebelled against the new reform programs, the roles African Americans played during the American Revolution, how the patriots achieved the unity needed to wage the War for Independence, and the impact the American Revolution had on the Native Americans. First, I will start with the opposition the colonists had when it came to the Sugar, Currency, and Stamp Acts. Unlike the Molasses Act which benefited the people of the colonies, the new acts imposed on them were just a burden and quite unfair. The Sugar Act came about during the time that George Grenville was appointed as first minister. His responsibility was to solve the debt crisis they were facing. Since the British at home were highly taxed, Grenville’s solution was to tax the Americans since he felt they benefited from the war. Needless to say, the Sugar Act was primarily to raise revenue rather than regulate trade. The Sugar Act eliminated the sugar trade between the Continental colonies and the French and Spanish. This angered the colonists along with the newly added Currency Act which forbade the colonies from issuing paper money, thus creating a shortage of currency. Next came the Stamp Act which provoked an even greater storm of protest. The law departed entirely from the confines of mercantilist policy. Parliament just wanted to raise internal revenue so that they could use that money to pay troops in the colonies. The colonists were extremely infuriated because for them this meant that they had to purchase stamps for official documents and published papers, which included a multitude of items. All publications and transactions were subject to this special tax. To make matters worse, the colonists were only permitted to in specie. They habitually used paper money and credit instead of the scarce gold and silver. One of the groups of people involved in the American Revolution was the African American group. Lord Dunmore, royal Governor of Virginia, declared all indented servants, Negroes, or others (owned by rebels) free, that were able and willing to bear arms and join His Majesty’s Troops. The blacks were divided into two specific groups: the free blacks and slaves. The British wanted to disrupt and weaken the colonists so that’s why they offered the southern slaves emancipation. The Whigs considered this foul play and as a consequence they increased slave patrols and warned of harsh punishments to those who ran away or took up arms against their masters. The penalty for slave rebellion was death. Although threatened, the African Americans still aided the British by joining the army and employing their firsthand knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay. Some served as pilots along its tributaries; others delivered fresh provisions to the British ships by foraging plantations at night. African Americans certainly played a role within the American Revolution, but they received little welcome from the Whigs. When the Americans created an army from volunteer forces besieging Boston, they excluded slaves and even free blacks from participating. The patriots achieved the unity they needed to wage the War for Independence because of the British Government’s constant restrictions and need to be in control. The British expected the Coercive Acts to isolate Boston and convince other provinces to be obedient, but instead all the acts did was push the Americans toward unity. The patriots knew they had to work together to even stand a chance at breaking away from Britain’s overbearingness. Their unity grew even stronger when the British government sent General Cage to take forceful action. His method of doing that was attempting to seize the patriot’s stores of food and ammunition at Concord which he learned about from an informer. Militant Bostonians had spies that ended up discovering Gage’s plan, and they were ready to spread the alarm. This is the moment the patriots stood as â€Å"one† unit. It didn’t matter that they were not finished being trained and were unprepared. They all came out to fight, and they fought for all the same basic reasons. There were numerous battles that were yet to come, but this was the start of the patriot’s unity. Eventually all of the battles/wars led to drafting of the Declaration of Independence, which some people believe to be the ultimate reason the patriots achieved the unity they needed to wage the war for independence. The Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and set forth Congress’s reasons for separating from the government George III; the revolutionaries focused on the king’s offenses because they had already denied the sovereignty of Parliament. The Native Americans were also another group impacted by the American Revolution. Many took the side of the Americans but the majority sided with the British and assisted them in this revolution. Native Americans believed the Americans were more of a direct threat to them because they lived on the continent and would immediately â€Å"take the land†. Native Americans assimilated, and adopted new norms and customs of white America. The result of the American Revolution was a win for the American Whigs. They were finally able to create a new government and not be ruled by a king or anyone of nobility. Unfortunately for the Native Americans, the new government gave them the short end of the stick. They got exactly what they were afraid of, and that was their land being at stake. Their land rights were not respected. As it is evident, the colonies tried to maintain some sort of composure and not have to resort to violence with the British Government. They quickly transitioned from this peaceful resistance to outright war because the British Government kept intervening in their lives and trying to have control of every aspect of it. When things got out of hand, the American Revolution took place and it impacted everyone including: the African Americans, Native Americans, the British, and etc. The result of the war for independence was success for the patriot’s and since many Native Americans sided with and assisted the British, their outcome was losing what they feared most. They’re land was not respected and they had no control over that. Responding To Stress Essays - Stress, Emotion, Eating Disorder

Responding to Stress Suppose that you are in your car in the middle of a traffic jam heading home from school after a terrible day. You feel frustrated and groan as you think about the calculus midterm you have tomorrow, which you still have to study for. Suddenly, you have to hit the brakes. Your heart starts beating faster and you insult the driver whom nearly made you crash. Are these reactions normal? Indeed they are, since they are merely examples of stress. Many everyday circumstances, such as deadlines, tests, debts, and conflicts in personal relationships are stressful. Routine hassles at home, school, and work may create strain that affects mental and physical health and decreases the quality of life because tension accumulates. Stress is an everyday occurrence that renders emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses. When people are under stress, they usually react emotionally. Emotional responses are a natural and normal part of life, although most of the time stress tends to elicit unpleasant emotions rather than pleasurable ones. However, these unpleasant emotions serve an important purpose, since sometimes stress can make one cry and crying functions as an excellent therapy to get rid of pressure. Some common emotional responses to stress include irritation, frustration, and depression. For instance, because many people undergo mood swings and become irritated as a reaction to stress, they may end up hurting their relatives or friends. Even more, some people might become frustrated as they notice that they cannot achieve what they want at a particular moment. This frustration makes one feel hopeless and leads to depression. Depression is the most common emotional response to stress. People, not being able to adapt to change appropriately, may feel overwhelmed and often fail to recognize that they have a problem. When the situation comes to the point of depression, it is necessary to seek professional help in order to avoid further psychological complications. Even more, physiological changes may also accompany emotional responses. Eating disorders, insomnia, and nervous breakdowns are the most common physiological responses associated with stress. Nowadays life is so agitating that it is common for people to disregard their eating habits because of so much pressure and work. This malnutrition includes not eating sufficiently or over-eating to cope with anxiety. Insomnia is another physiological response to stress. Humans cannot function well without sleep because sleeplessness directly affects behavior. Fatigue will make a restless person become less productive and this creates even more stress. Moreover, nervous breakdowns also constitute a direct physiological reaction to frustration. It is common for people to feel nervous when having to meet the demands of society because of pressure. A way to deal positively with stress must be found when physiological effects become apparent and there is a change in behavior. Emotional and physiological responses to stress can often lead to changes in behavior. For instance, because of depression caused by frustration people may not work to their full potential because stress takes away their desire to excel in daily activities. People might also behaviorally respond to stress by being aggressive towards others. Aggression is almost always caused by frustration, although people may aggressively attack those who have nothing to do with their problem. Verbal abuse is an example of this type of behavior. While being emotionally disturbed, people can sometimes insult those not responsible for their misfortunes. Similarly, once the situation turns to physical abuse, it is obvious that one needs to seek treatment. Even though aggressive behavior leads to a release of emotional tension, the interpersonal conflicts that often emerge increase stress. On the whole, behavioral changes caused by stress serve as a warning for those who need to take more positive actio ns to improve their reactions to stress. In brief, stress is a normal reaction to everyday circumstances that triggers emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses. Because our mental and physical health is affected by strain, it is necessary to find effective techniques to cope with stress. For instance, meditating while listening to comforting music helps to relax ones body and mind. Likewise, a soothing massage releases muscular tensions and immediately reduces pressure. In addition, a vigorous workout relieves stress, since one is able get distracted from the problem. Finally, talking

Free Essays on Father And I

In the short story â€Å"Father and I†, by Par Lagerkvist, a boy and his father take a walk in the woods on a Sunday afternoon. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and a familiar train drives by. The father waves and the driver waves back. Everything is perfect. Then it begins to get dark. Things are changing and nothing looks the same. The boy is frightened, but the father tells the boy he shouldn’t be. Out of nowhere, a dark and mysterious train comes close to hitting them both. The father points out that it is strange to see a train like that. The boy starts to realize that he is different from his father and that his whole life is going to be frightening. When it starts to get dark, the boy senses his own vulnerability in the world. The boy is thinking that the dark is making the world come alive. †It is getting darker and darker, and the trees were so queer. They stood and listened for the sound of footsteps, as they didn’t know who we were. It was roaring down underneath us as if it wanted to swallow us up, as the ground seem to open under us.† This shows that he is frightened. Right after the father told the boy he shouldn’t be frightened, the boy realizes his father cannot always protect him. â€Å"I felt so lonely, so abandoned. It was queer that it was only me that was frightened, not Daddy. It was queer that we didn’t feel the same about it. And it was queerer still that what he said didn’t help, didn’t stop me being frightened.† This shows that the boy can’t always depend on his father and he will need to make his own secure world. The boy learns that he must be in charge of his own safety and security in the world. â€Å" It was all the fear which would come to me, all the unknown; all that Daddy didn’t know about, and couldn’t save me from. Overview of the Op Art Movement

Overview of the Op Art Movement Op Art (short for Optical Art) is an art movement that emerged in the 1960s. It is a distinct style of art that creates the illusion of movement. Through the use of precision and mathematics, stark contrast, and abstract shapes, these sharp  pieces of artwork have a three-dimensional quality that is not seen in other styles of art. Op Art Emerges in the 1960s Flashback to 1964. In the United States, we were still reeling from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, encapsulated in the Civil Rights movement, and being invaded by British pop/rock music. Many people were also over the notion of achieving the idyllic lifestyles that were so prevalent in the 1950s. It was a perfect time for a new artistic movement to burst on the scene.   In October of 1964, in an article describing this new style of art, Time Magazine coined the phrase Optical Art (or Op Art, as its more commonly known). The term referenced the fact that Op Art is comprised of illusion and often appears to the human eye to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically-based composition. After (and because of) a major 1965 exhibition of Op Art entitled The Responsive Eye, the public became enraptured with the movement. As a result, one began to see Op Art everywhere: in print and television advertising, as LP album art, and as a fashion motif in clothing and interior design. Although the term was coined and the exhibition held in the mid-1960s, most people who have studied these things agree that Victor Vasarely pioneered the movement with his 1938 painting Zebra. M. C. Eschers style has sometimes caused him to be listed as an Op artist as well, though they dont quite fit the definition. Many of his best-known works were created in the 1930s and include amazing perspectives and use of tessellations (shapes in close arrangements). These two certainly helped point the way for others. It can also be argued that none of Op Art would have been possible- let alone embraced by the public- without the prior Abstract and Expressionist movements. These led the way by de-emphasizing (or, in many cases, eliminating) representational subject matter. Op Art Remains Popular As an official movement, Op Art has been given a lifespan of around three years. This doesnt mean, however, that every artist ceased employing Op Art as their style by 1969. Bridget Riley is one noteworthy artist who has moved from achromatic to chromatic pieces but has steadfastly created Op Art from its beginning to the present day. Additionally, anyone who has gone through a post-secondary fine arts program probably has a tale or two of Op-ish projects created during color theory studies. Its also worth mentioning that, in the digital age, Op Art is sometimes viewed with bemusement. Perhaps you, too, have heard the (rather snide, some would say) comment, A child with the proper graphic design software could produce this stuff. Quite true, a gifted child with a computer and the proper software at her disposal could certainly create Op Art in the 21st century. This certainly wasnt the case in the early 1960s, and the 1938 date of Vasarelys Zebra speaks for itself in this regard. Op Art represents a great deal of math, planning and technical skill, as none of it came freshly-inked out of a computer peripheral. Original, hand-created Op Art deserves respect, at the very least. What Are the Characteristics of Op Art? Op Art exists to fool the eye. Op compositions create a sort of visual tension in the viewers mind that gives works the illusion of movement. For example, concentrate on Bridget Rileys Dominance Portfolio, Blue (1977) for even a few seconds and it begins to dance and wave in front of your eyes. Realistically, you know  that any Op Art piece is flat, static, and two-dimensional. Your eye, however, begins sending your brain the message that what its seeing has begun to oscillate, flicker, throb and any other verb one can employ to mean, Yikes! This painting is moving! Op Art is not meant to  represent reality.  Due to its geometrically-based nature, Op Art is, almost without exception, non-representational. Artists do not attempt to depict anything we know in real life. Instead, it is more like abstract art in which composition, movement, and shape dominate. Op Art is not created by chance. The elements employed in a piece of Op Art are carefully chosen to achieve maximum effect. In order for the illusion to work, each color,  line,  and shape must contribute to the overall composition. It takes a great deal of forethought to successfully create artwork in the Op Art style. Op Art relies on two specific techniques. The critical techniques used in Op Art are perspective and careful juxtaposition of color. The color may be chromatic (identifiable hues) or achromatic (black, white, or gray). Even when color is used, they tend to be very bold and can be either complementary or high-contrast.   Op Art typically does not include the blending of colors. The lines and shapes of this style are very well defined. Artists do not use shading when transitioning from one color to the next and quite often two high-contrast colors are placed next to each other. This harsh shift is a key part of what disturbs and tricks your eye into seeing movement where there is none. Op Art embraces negative space. In Op Art- as in perhaps no other artistic school- positive and negative spaces in a composition are of equal importance. The illusion could not be created without both, so Op artists tend to focus just as much on the negative space as they do the positive.
